Building a Stronger Marriage: Why Priorities Matter

Hello! Welcome to my personal journal blog. For those who do not know me, I am Fatima Pierre, and this is where I share my thoughts and experiences. No, I am not an expert on this topic, but what I share comes from my personal experience, and I believe these insights are worth sharing.

I have been a wife for almost a year as of writing this. Before marrying, my partner and I were in a relationship for nine years. Yes, it took us almost a decade before we finally decided to settle down. And indeed, as some people say, marriage is one of the biggest decisions you need to make carefully. This is why I want to share some of my insights about marriage.

Today, we will talk about priorities in marriage and why they matter.

1. Marriage shifts priorities—your partner comes first, just as your mother was your father’s priority

I think a lot of newly married couples go through major adjustments, especially in this area. It is important to understand that marrying someone means making your partner your top priority.

Families of both partners must also respect these changes. In Filipino culture, we are very family-oriented, and sometimes, we forget to respect the boundaries of a married couple.

2. A strong marriage thrives when priorities are clear

Communication is key. Talking about your priorities matters. Of course, when we say "communication," we also mean truly understanding each other.

Will you build your dream house now? Should you prioritize your career first? Should you have a baby first? Setting personal and shared goals as a couple is essential. Discuss your Step 1, Step 2, Step 3, and so on—along with how you plan to achieve them.

3. Love and respect

When you love someone, respect should always come first. Without respect, love cannot thrive. Respecting your spouse also means being honest with him or her.

For some, these insights may not be new. Still, I wanted to share them, and I hope you learned something. 😉

Hanggang sa muli!
